C-I Girls defeat Zephyrs, Bison

BASKETBALL UPDATES:

Cambridge-Isanti girls basketball improved to 10-5 on the season with a pair of victories over four days.

On Jan. 22, the Bluejackets raised their conference record to 2-1 by defeating host Buffalo 72-54. Brynn Liljander paced the offense with 29 points, and Justine Larson added 12 points. Adding more key scoring were Lily Porta (8), Amanda Hanson (5) and Maria Vavra (5).

On Saturday, the host Bluejackets rolled out to a 47-25 lead at the half and maintained pressure to defeat Mahtomedi 74-54 in non-conference action. Liljander popped four three-pointers amid her game-high 25 points, adding six assists. Hanson followed with 16 points, and Larson scored 12 in the victory. Both Paige Muehlhauser and Porta scored 8 against the Zephyrs.

The C-I girls battle for Mississippi position when they host Monticello Jan. 25.

Bomber girls win at Isle 77-59

In the key battle for the Great River lead, the Braham girls basketball squad downed host Isle 77-59 Jan. 27. It was a tight 31-23 Bomber lead at the half, and Braham kept the Huskies at bay in the second half as Becca Dahlman had to sit with four fouls.

Dahlman finished the game with 31 points and doubled up with 10 rebounds. Dani Braund also posted the double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, while Jaclyn Hollenkamp provided strong interior defense again while scoring 6 and grabbing 4 steals and 6 rebounds. Adding more scoring in the victory were Jenna Winter (15, hitting 5-of-9 three-pointers) and Kayla Nickles (12 and adding 5 steals on defense).

On Jan. 22, the Bomber girls defeated Onamia 105-22.

Braham boys still perfect in GRC

The Bombers kept ahead of Hinckley-Finlayson in the Great River standings with two wins this past week.

On Jan. 18, the Bombers defeating visiting Isle 84-48 when John Larson scored 21 and fed 5 assists. Shaun Hollenkamp scored 19 and also had 5 assists. Chris Olson sank 4 three-pointers amid his 18 points, and Connor Tschumper added 16 points. Sam Stigen dealt 10 assists and finished with 4 points.

On Jan. 22, Braham ran past host Onamia 83-57. The freshmen led the way in scoring against the Panthers: Olson 26 points(6-for-9 on three-pointers, 9 rebounds), Larson 23 (5-for-9 on 3s, 6 rebounds, 6 assists) and Tshumper 20 (10-for-12 from field). Stigen dealt 14 more assists, and Hollenkamp added 7 points & 3 steals).

After their Jan. 24 game at Rush City, the Bombers have a prime Section 7AA preview game at Moose Lake Jan. 29.

Big Lake 67, C-I Boys 57

The Bluejacket boys began the Mississippi 8 season with a 67-57 road loss to improved and strong Big Lake Jan. 18. Leading scorers for C-I were Kyle McDonald (24), Matt Swanson (24) and Aaron Allen (11).

CCS hoops squads sweep Immanuel

At Foreston Jan. 19, the Cambridge Christian basketball teams swept Immanuel Lutheran, with the boys winning 71-47 and the girls prevailing 66-38. Leading the Warrior boys that afternoon were Peter Maring (23 points), Justin Roble (18), Jake Bergman (12) and Grant Taylor (7).

On Jan. 18, the CCS boys defeated Fourth Baptist 56-45 behind 16 points from Bergman and 11 from Maring.
