A 50-year-old Cedar man has died following injuries sustained in a single vehicle car crash on Tuesday, Jan. 1.
According to the Isanti County Sheriff’s Department, at 7:50 a.m., the department received a report of a single vehicle car crash at the intersection of Apollo St. NE and 269th Ave. in Oxford Township in Isanti County.
When first responders arrived on scene, they found Thomas Leonard Babinski, lying outside of his SUV. The SUV had been driven off the end of the roadway at the “T” intersection and subsequently rolled. It is unknown at this time if Babinski was ejected or if he tried to get out of the vehicle on his own.
It is also unknown at what time the crash actually occurred, as it appears the crash occurred a few hours prior to it being reported due to the nature of the injuries and the fact the vehicle had rolled so far off the roadway that the vehicle was not visible to east or westbound traffic, as well as the fact it would not likely have been seen during hours of darkness.
Babinski was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in critical condition and subsequently died at the hospital.
Law enforcement cannot determine at this time if alcohol played a role in the crash, but blood was drawn at the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation by the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office. Also assisting at the scene were the Isanti Fire District, Isanti County Safety and Rescue, Minnesota State Patrol and North Memorial Air Ambulance.
