New church is located between Cambridge and Princeton
A church will celebrate the grand opening of its new building this Sunday, Dec. 30, as it transitions from a small congregation based in the pastors’ home to a remodeled building on Highway 95.
Word of Life was born when pastors Vern and Mary Peltz transferred from Denver, Colo., to the Cambridge area in 2004 to start a church.
“We are a very family-based church,” Mary said. “We have a lot of children in our church. Our focus is on that. It’s definitely conducive for family and all age groups.”
They began with a home church, running services in their living room. In the fall of 2005, they set up a modular on their property because they outgrew their home and needed more space.
They also set up a children’s church in their three-car garage, but eventually outgrew those spaces as well.
That’s when Mary and Vern purchased an existing structure at 6888 Hwy. 95 N.W. and refurbished and remodeled it.
Now the pastors are looking forward to offering more space and welcoming new and old members to the congregation.
“We address everyday issues, things people are dealing with and need insight in finding answers in life — how to make their lives work the way they want them to,” Vern said. “Our vision is we’re a ‘how-to’ church, so we’re all about finding answers and helping people find resolutions.”
Word of Life is a contemporary church, with a live praise band and contemporary music. Mary is a certified counselor, so she offers specialized classes in abuse, anger management and recovery during the week.
Mary said they have a lot of ministries that were in the making but they didn’t have the space for until now.
“Moving gives us the ability to expand and help in that area of missions to have the setup to reach out that way,” she said. “We really want to be a help to the community; whether people come to our church as members or not, our goal is to have different meetings and classes.”
Vern said it was challenging working with a building that wasn’t designed to be a church and turning it into one.
“We had the shell but basically everything else is new,” he said. A lot of volunteer time and labor was involved from the congregation, Vern added.
Celebrate the grand opening of the new building at 6888 Hwy. 95 N.W. this Sunday, Dec. 30, with prayer at 9:15 a.m. and service at 10 a.m. For more information on Word of Life, visit www.WordofLifeMN.org or call 763-689-5880.
