The Braham Area School Board approved a 3.9 percent increase in the 2013 District 314 property tax levy.
The total levied amount is about $1.7 million, with the increase mainly due to health and safety.
“A large chunk of that was through our food service,” said Superintendent Greg Winter. “We had a lot of maintenance and replacement of old equipment.”
Last year, the levy amount was set at $1.6 million, which was a 5.6 percent decrease from the previous year.
“A lot of the health and safety was due to the food service upgrades we’ve done. We’ve upgraded a lot of equipment. You have to do it—either that or the state cites it and says ‘well, it’s not functioning,’” Winter said. “We are constantly looking at maintaining our building so that our building works and functions.”
