Donald “Donnie” Larson

Donald “Donnie” Larson, 91, of Braham, passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at GracePointe Crossing West Gables in Cambridge.

Donald was born Dec. 16, 1920 in Braham, Minn. to parents Edwin and Ruth (Pierson) Larson. Donnie grew up in Braham and graduated from Braham High School in 1938. He went on to Gustavus Adolphus College before leaving school to enlist in the United States Coast Guard.  Donnie was stationed on the USS Randall, serving overseas in the Philippines from 1942 to 1946. He returned home to Braham and began working for the family business, Braham Monument Company. He began working in the shop cutting stencils and setting markers and in the early 60s began handling monument sales. In the mid 60s Donnie became the general manager until he retired in the mid 80s. Donnie was a proud past president of the Monument Builders of North America. On June 26, 1948, Donnie was united in marriage to Iona Arlene Wicklander at the Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church. They were lifelong members and served on many church boards and committees.

In his younger years, Donnie enjoyed fishing and boating with the family at a cabin on Lake Mille Lacs. Throughout his life, Donnie was an avid golfer and was one of the original members of the Purple Hawk Golf Course. After his retirement, Donnie and Iona spent many winters in Arizona with their snowbird friends. Donnie was an enthusiastic reader and enjoyed reading mystery novels. He will be dearly missed.

Donnie is preceded in death by his parents, wife Iona, sister Marcella Wicklander, and nephew Gary Wicklander.

He is survived by nieces and nephews Jane Wicklander (Steve Elliott), Todd (Laura) Wicklander, Mary (Richard) Merhar, Linda (Ken) Rhody, and Barb Wicklander; many great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Funeral Service was held Monday, November 26, 2012 at the Braham Evangelical Lutheran church with Rev. Rich Chronis officiating.  Music was provided by Elaine Johnson. Casket Bearers were Todd Wicklander, Tim Merhar, Richard Carlson, Marvin Carlson, Ken Rhody, and Richard Merhar.  Interment was in the Rice Lake Cemetery of Braham. Military Honors were provided by the National Guard Honors Team. Memorials are preferred to the Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church. Arrangements are by the Rock Ingebrand Funeral Home of Braham.
