No. 2 seed Duluth Marshall hung a 44-22 loss on Braham in the Oct. 27 Section 7AA semifinals, ending the Bombers’ season with a 5-5 mark. The Hilltoppers will take on six-time defending champ Moose Lake-Willow River in the Nov. 1 section championship in Duluth for the right to go to State.
Marshall opened the game with touchdown runs of 39 and 29 yards 12 seconds apart which were sandwiched around a Braham fumble for a quick 15-0 lead. The Bombers cut it to 15-6 when John Larson found Shaun Hollenkamp for a 6-yard TD pass. But the Hilltoppers regrouped with scoring runs of 37 and 24 yards to hold a 28-6 advantage at the half.
The Hilltoppers continued to amass a game-total of 447 rushing yards when they increased the lead to 34-6 midway through the third quarter. Braham’s final touchdowns of the season were a 6-yard catch by Dylan Altendorf and a 4-yard reception by Zach Dahlman.
“Marshall’s rushing dominance was from team strength. We have to work extremely hard in the weight room this offseason,” said Bomber Coach Shawn Kuhnke. Looking back at the season, he finished, “We will miss the seniors– a group of hardworking leaders. This year’s underclassmen have gotten a lot of varsity experience, so we are excited about 2013. But we also know there is a lot of hard work needed to achieve the level of success we are looking for.”
