Volleyball playoffs take to courts this week

Bombers land No. 1 seed in Section 5A:  Great River Conference champ Braham earned a No. 1 seed for its half of the Section 5A brackets, with the volleyball playoffs beginning this week.

The Bombers get a first-round bye, then they will host either No. 4 East Central (7-11) or No. 5 Barnum (4-18) in the Friday, Oct. 26 quarterfinals (7 p.m.).

A win would advance Braham to the Tuesday, Oct. 30 semifinals for another home match.

In Braham’s half of the brackets are No. 2 McGregor (13-9), No. 3 Rush City (12-11) and No. 6 Ogilvie (2-21). In the other East pod bracket, defending section champ Nevis (20-8) is the No. 1 seed, and GRC runner-up Onamia (16-9) is seeded No. 2.

Subsection finals will be Nov. 1 at Pierz, with the Section 5A championship on Nov. 3 back in Pierz. The 5A West subsection is led by Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (22-7) and Upsala (24-5).

• The Bombers closed the regular season on a five-match win streak when they defeated host Barnum Oct. 22: 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 15-10.

“The girls were off a bit in everything that night, but somehow despite this we were able to pull out the win,” noted Bomber Coach Britne Engelking. “Four girls that have not seen much court time this season all played and helped fill the void of co-captain Kayla Nickles who was out with an injury. Camilla Havkrog, Natalie Bacon, Amber Parker and Grace Zierden all stepped up to play and helped the team get the win.”
