Jackets handle Greyhounds 48-0

Moving into a three-way tie with Monticello and Rogers atop the Mississippi 8 Football standings, Cambridge-Isanti dominated visiting Duluth East 48-0 Oct. 5. This is the Greyhound’s inaugural season in the conference.

The Bluejackets held an opponent under 100 yards total offense for the second-straight week, forcing two turnovers and six punts.

Coach Mike Hennen: “The defense has been playing real well.  We have stopped the run all season long, but we’ve really improved our pass defense the past couple of weeks. We had some injuries on ‘D’ as well, and have not missed a beat with the new personnel. The players have sold all-out to the game plan, but more importantly to playing unselfish, physical defense.”

Sam Thomas (136 yards rushing) stayed on his scoring tear by breaking off 25 and 31 yards TD runs for a 14-0 Jacket lead midway through the second quarter. Chance Laidly (96 yards on ground) made it 21-0 with a 4-yard punch just before halftime.

The Bluejackets also aired it out for two scores when John Solberg connected with Laidly on a 66-yard catch-and-run, then found Hunter Vavra for a 44-yard TD pass play near the end of the third.

Coach Hennen: “The running game is definitely setting up the pass. All of Johnny’s completion were on play action. Chance’s two 66-yard catches were for 5 yards, and he turned up the sideline, getting great blocking down the sideline.”

Next up: On “Senior Night” Oct. 12, the Bluejackets host Big Lake who is on a nice two-game win streak, including defeating Rocori 12-0 last week.
