BARNUM HAMMERS BRAHAM: Cambridge-Isanti overwhelmed host Duluth Denfeld in a 53-0 Mississippi 8 victory Sept. 28, raising its season record to 4-1.

Sam Thomas had the golden touch that evening in Duluth, scoring the Bluejackets’ first five touchdowns. Thomas did it all on the ground, finding the end zone on runs of 1, 7, 11, 41 yards which had the Jackets up 27-0 at the half. He added a 1-yard run to start the third quarter.

Chance Laidly (18 carries, 158 yards) got C-I’s next TD on an 11-yard rush. Travis Holt scored on a 28-yard run, and Jesse Medin opened the fourth quarter with a 23-yard run to close out the scoring. John Solberg completed 7 passes for 111 yards, spreading it out to five receivers.

Holt led the defense with 14 tackles. Both Darren DeBaere and Weylin Iglesias added to their season sack total with one apiece, and Nate Henderson got the Jackets’ lone interception in the rout.

Next up: The Bluejackets host Duluth East, another first-year member of the Mississippi 8, on Oct. 5. The Greyhounds lost to Big Lake 41-36 last week.

Barnum hammers Braham for GPFA lead

Braham began their tough final  three-game stretch of the 2012 regular season by getting pounded at Barnum 52-13 Sept. 28. The loss lifted the northern Bombers ahead of Braham in the Great Polar Football Alliance Red Conference standings.

Barnum built a 28-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown runs of 14, 24, 50 and 2 yards. Early in the second quarter they added a 73-yard TD pass. The Bombers’ lead extended to 52-0 in the third quarter on three more rushing touchdowns.

Braham cracked the scoreboard on a 27-yard pass from Sam Stigen to Casey Grell. Randy Braund added the final TD on a 48-yard run when the reserves took the field.

Next up: It doesn’t get much easier for the Bombers this week when they host Dawson-Boyd Oct. 5. The defending Class A champion Blackjacks (4-1) are ranked seventh in Class A this season, with their lone loss coming to close rival Minneota.
