Magic rallies to send Bluejacket Football to first loss
Cambridge-Isanti led 13-7 at the half, but host Monticello was the only team to score in the second half, rallying for a 20-13 victory. The Magic stayed perfect on the season at 3-0, while the Bluejackets slipped to 2-1.
The C-I offense never crossed the goal line against Monti and turned the ball over four times (two fumbles/two picks). Still, the Jackets owned a 5 1/2 minute edge in time-of-possession.
Hunter Vavra got the Bluejackets on the board when he returned a punt 83 yards five minutes into the Mississippi 8 battle. The Magic answered right back with a quick scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard TD run.
Josh Rouse continued his fine kicking season for C-I when he booted field goals of 41 and 39 yards which had C-I leading at the break.
Monticello went to the air well in the second half as QB Matt Bonk finished with 196 yards against the Jacket defense. Will Bauman’s 9-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter locked the game at 13-13. It took a last-minute drive for the Magic to hold on to first place in the conference when Bonk hooked up with Hayden Laimer on a 16-yard TD pass with 35 seconds remaining in regulation.
Linebacker Kyle Chromy was active on the C-I defense with 13 tackles– three for loss. D-tackle Joe Miller followed with 10.5 tackles– two for loss.
• Next up: The Bluejackets host their Sept. 21 Homecoming game with Buffalo coming to town for a Mississippi 8 matchup. The Bison (0-3) were tipped by tough Rogers 38-35 last week.
