Swinging the racket well out of the gate, the Bluejacket girls tennis squad upped its season record to 3-0 by sweeping Cloquet-Esko and Duluth Denfeld Aug. 25.
On Aug. 23, the Cambridge-Isanti girls also played well at the individual-bracketed Delano-Orono Invite.
Coach Lee Orvik: “At 1st Doubles, Nikki Hallstrom & Jade Newman went 2-1 at Delano and earned medals. After a tough opening round loss to a strong Brainerd team, Hallstrom & Newman defeated Orono’s 1st doubles duo in straight sets. They then went on to defeat a duo from Staples-Motley that included one of last year’s State Doubles entrants.
“At 4th doubles, Katrina Page & Dagne Gorham made it to the championship match against an extremely strong Delano team. Page & Gorham earned 2nd place medals, defeating teams from Orono and South St. Paul.
“At 3rd Singles, Danielle Page medaled by going 2-1 on the day. She lost to the eventual champion from Orono in the first round. After that Page rolled through her opponents from Staples-Motley and Totino-Grace.”
“On Saturday, we played a triangular against Section 7AA rivals Cloquet-Esko-Carlton and Duluth Denfeld. We didn’t lose a match or even a set all day. We looked very confident at every position. We still have a lot to work on so we can continue to grow, but starting 3-0 as a team is a nice way to kick off the season.”
