The Minnesota Department of Revenue is warning taxpayers of a new scam that targets their personal or banking information.
A group, referring to itself as “Alliance,” calls taxpayers and claims to be “Minnesota Internal Service Representatives.” Alliance claims there is a large refund waiting for the taxpayer. Alliance says it can send the fake refund if the taxpayer provides bank account details and pays a small penalty fee. The group may also know Social Security numbers and other personal taxpayer information.
The Minnesota Department of Revenue never charges a fee for sending refunds and does not call taxpayers asking for personal information before sending out refunds.
