Cambridge Legion goes 1-2 in NorthEnd playoffs
The Cambridge American Legion baseball team closed out its summer of action with a 14-5 overall record after going 1-2 in last week’s NorthEnd League playoffs. Princeton and Milaca advanced to represent the league in this weekend’s District 10 tournament in Bloomington.
The Post #290 squad opened the NorthEnd tourney with a 7-1 loss to North Branch Tuesday night in Princeton. They rallied the following evening by eliminating Chisago Lakes in a wild 17-16 game. But Cambridge’s season came to a close when Milaca prevailed 11-4 Thursday night.
Leading hitters for the Cambridge Legion this summer: Kevin Johnson .461, Mitch Renstrom .452, Matt Ziebarth .362, Ryan Miller .343 and Luke McCracken .325. Leading pitchers: Jake Johnson 6-1, Ryan Miller 3-1, Matt Ziebarth 2-0, Austin Karpen 2-1, Mitch Renstrom 1-0.
• The Isanti VFW baseball squad closed out the regular season with victories in two of its last three games. On July 16, Post #2735 outlasted North Branch 17-9 as the two teams banged out 30 hits. Eli Otte paced the Isanti offense with 4 hits and 4 RBI. Cody Binger got the win in relief, pitching 4 innings and allowing 5 runs.
The following evening, Elk River defeated Isanti VFW 9-4 on the strength of a 5-run fifth inning.
In the regular-season finale on July 18, the Isanti VFW squad handled Chisago Lakes 11-5. Elliot Simon threw 3 strong innings, allowing no earned runs and just 2 hits. Kyle Chromy got the win in relief by tossing the final 4 innings. Simon had a pair of RBI singles to lead the offense.
• In the playoffs, the Isanti VFW defeated Irondale 11-2 on Sunday, but the team was swept by Totino-Grace 11-2 and 5-0 to end bring the season to a close.
