COMMUNITY SPORTS: The annual Ed Oliver Memorial National Qualifier men’s softball tourneys were hosted at Cambridge’s Sandquist Family Park last Saturday. In the ‘EE’ division, it was the Sunshine Depot out of Elk River (pictured) rolling to the title by virtue of defeating Cambridge teams Studweisers (16-4), The Buzz (8-2) and Patriot Lanes (19-7). MIMI’s of Brainerd defeated the Depot 9-5 in the first championship, but the Elk River boys rallied for eight runs in their last two innings to win the crown 8-2.
Chad Christian and Ross Orrock both contributed two-run doubles in that last victory. Orrock and shortstop Matt Schleppenbach were named Co-MVPs for the tourney.
“The entire tournament we had great pitching and played excellent defensively. We rely on our defense to be the difference-maker in tournament play,” noted team leader and pitcher Mike Wollak. “Winning this national qualifier means we get a berth to the MSF State tournament (Aug. 10-12 in Rogers), as well as the NSF North American Championships (Aug. 31-Sept. 2, location TBD).
In the ‘DD’ division, Patrick’s Piranhas of Pierz defeated its in-town rival Patrick’s Woodpeckers in the championship, with both teams earning National berths. The Long Ball Bat Co. of Chisago Lakes finished in 3rd place.
