Marjorie Bernice (Nelson) Quiggle
Marge was born in Eagle Township, Kossuth County, Armstrong, Iowa on Feb. 1, 1914, the sixth of eight children, to Ira and Tillie (Johnson) Nelson. As a young child, her family moved to a farm in Imogene, Martin County, Minn. She attended country school there. Her family then moved to a farm near Granada when she was in the 5th grade.
Marjorie was baptized March 8, 1914 at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong, Iowa. Marjorie was confirmed June 8, 1930 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Minn. She graduated from the Granada High School in 1933.
On Nov. 4, 1933 she was united in marriage to John W. Quiggle in Fairbault, Minn. They began a life of dairy farming during the great depression, renting different farms. Their first son, Jack, was born in 1934. Dick was born in 1936 and Bruce was born in 1938. During the Armistice Day Storm of 1941, they lost their entire herd of sheep. They were buried under the storm and not found until the following spring.
In 1946, John and Marge bought their first farm northwest of Braham, Minn. in Kanabec County in the Seward community. They and their three boys moved all their cattle, pigs and chickens, farm machinery and belongings to begin a new life there. In 1956, twin daughters, Janice and Jeanne were born to their family. Being a farm girl all her life taught Marge to be a strong woman, being able to deal with adversity and have a good work ethic. She enjoyed the farm life and worked very hard. She took very good care of her family. The Seward Birthday Club was a fun social gathering of neighborhood ladies that she enjoyed getting together with every month for close to 40 years. She was the last surviving original member of that club.
In 1970, John and Marge sold their farm and moved into Braham. Marge then worked as a cook at the elementary schools for the Braham School District for 11 years.
Marge had a strong Christian faith throughout her life. She was always involved with church activities. She taught Sunday school classes for 45 years, played piano, attended Bible Studies, and worked with women’s ministries making quilts and working in the kitchen. She attended the Braham Ev. Covenant Church.
She always enjoyed gardening, flowers, and the nature outdoors. She loved entertaining family and friends with a good meal.
Marge’s husband, John, passed away June 14, 1993. She remained in her home until 2001 when she moved into the Park Manor Apartments in Braham, enjoying the many friends there. Marge entered Grace Pointe Crossing Gables West in Cambridge, Minn. in April, 2012.
