Isanti Classic tourney this weekend

This upcoming weekend is the annual Isanti Classic Tournament hosted by the Isanti Redbirds amateur baseball team. Coming to town are the Mora Blue Devils, Elk River Pioneers, Albertville Villians, Anoka Bucs, Coon Rapids Redbirds, St. Anthony Hogs and Twin Ports North Stars.

The Redbirds open the tourney on Friday, June 15 with a 6:30 p.m. game vs. Elk River. That will be followed by an 8:30 p.m. battle between St. Anthony and Anoka, with action getting back underway in Isanti at 9 a.m. Saturday morning (Mora vs. Albertville).

On Sunday, the schedule goes: 7th-place game 12 p.m., Consolation Finals 2:30 p.m., 3rd-place game 5 p.m. and Championship 7:30 p.m. All action is at Redbird Field.

Isanti Manager Steve Allen’s update: “The Isanti Redbirds continue to play exciting and competitive baseball games. They currently are 6-0 in Metro Minny games and 13-2 overall. The ‘Birds had a chance to beat a very good Big Lake team on Sunday night, but the rains came and washed out the game with them leading 7- 2.

Two weekends ago, Isanti played in the prestigious Sartell-St. Stephens Tournament (The Omann Insurance Invitational) and won their first two games against very good teams (Winsted and Detroit Lakes) but lost to another excellent team, the Lastrup Lakers, in the championship game.

“In spite of injuries, the Redbirds have been led by a strong pitching staff. Dallas Nelson and Adam West currently lead the team with 4 – 0 records.  Joe Ramberg, Matt Duong, Tyler Schaff, Brian Schultz and Packy Lind have also been very productive on the mound.

“Lind, Kyle Johnson and Schaff lead the team in batting averages, but there has been a real offensive team effort with excellent execution throughout the batting order.  Jake Maros and Kyle Johnson lead the team in homeruns and RBI’s. The team batting average is .312, but more importantly, the team slugging average is .407 and the team’s on-base percentage is .444.”

• On June 20, the Redbirds get a home rematch with defending Wisconsin State champ River Falls (7:30 p.m.).

Metro Minny League: Isanti 6-0, 13-2; Blaine 6-1, 18-1; Coon Rapids 3-1, 10-3; Forest Lake 3-1, 4-4; Champlin 4-4, 5-4; Big Lake 2-2, 4-6; St. Francis 1-2, 10-4; Anoka 1-3, 3-4; East Bethel 2-7, 6-9; Hamel 0-6, 0-6.
