Berny Beck, (Bernadine Mary Pipp Sward Beck), passed over to be with God on May 22, 2012. Berny was born in Minneapolis at the Swedish Hospital on Jan. 4, 1944 to August Pipp and Doris (Lowe) Pipp. She attended St. Phillips Catholic School for her elementary years, Jordan Junior High, and Vocational High School (restaurant business).
She worked at a buffet in downtown Minneapolis, a record company and Honeywell.
Berny married Steve Sward in 1962 and the couple moved to Arkansas while Steve was serving in the Army. When she came back to Minnesota worked at Frito Lay until the plant closed. During that time she was a teacher’s aid in the Osseo/Maple grove school district. Berny and Steve had two daughters, Brenda and Theresa. Once the children were in school full time she helped to found C.R.O.S.S. (Christians Reaching out to Social Services) where she served as coordinator until the family moved to Isanti in 1975. Steve and Berny eventually went their separate ways after being married for 22 years. She had many jobs, she worked at Cooper’s Corner Store in East Bethel, Hinckley Casino, she helped set up the Wal-Mart in Cambridge, was an Assistant Manager at Murphy’s USA in Cambridge and the Deli Manager at Isanti Mobil. In 1994 Berny married Jerry Beck I, and she has 3 step-sons Jerry II, Jason, and Jonathan.
Berny enjoyed cooking, baking, playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, giving her kids a hard time, greeting her morning customers with a sunshine of a smile, fishing, swimming as a child and playing kick the can. She surely was one of a kind.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Brenda (Sam) Beushel, Theresa Carlson, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings JoAnn and Bob Swedock, Sharon Norman (Pipp), and Roger Pipp. As well as stepsons Jason and Jonathan Beck and families, cousins, and all of her friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Beck, parents August and Doris (Lowe) Pipp, step father Willard Swedock, brothers Tom and Bob Pipp, step son Jerry Beck, son in law Russ Carlson, granddaughter Katrina.
A memorial service will be held June 16, 2012 at noon at Faith Lutheran Church in Isanti, Minn. with Reverend Clifton Hanson officiating. Cremation services provided by Strike Funeral Home.
