Jacket Boys 2nd at 7AAA Golf

Cambridge-Isanti Boys Golf fired a season-low 310 to place 2nd place on Day 1 of the Section 7AAA tourney hosted May 28 at Grand National GC. The Bluejackets are 15 strokes back of leader Forest Lake, and Andover (312) will join those two teams when the 7AAA tourney resumes back in Hinckley May 31 (10:15 a.m. first tee-off; all golfers start on No. 1 hole).

The 7AAA team champion advances to the Class AAA State Meet to be hosted once again at Bunker Hills GC June 12-13.

Matt Swanson fired a career-low 2-under 70 to lead the field. Jonah Poppen also shot a career-best 77, with more C-I scores coming from Jared Knutson (80), Nate Cox (83), Reggie Martin (85) and Austin Galligan (86).

C-I Girls Golf also marked their best 18-hole score of the year, placing 6th out of 13 teams at Monday’s 7AAA Section tourney with a 365, also at Grand National GC.

“The girls played great. We wanted to try and stay close to St. Michael and St. Francis, and we ended up beating them both by 11 strokes. Amazingly we were only 5 shots away from 4th place and missed out going back as a team on Day 2 by only 9 shots,” noted C-I Coach Steve Hanson.

Leah Schoenecker (88), Emily Sunderman (90) and Alyssa Rapp (90) added their names to the list of Jackets who shot career-low rounds this season. Those three qualified for Day 2 in the 7AAA Girls Individuals back at Grand National on May 31. Also posting scores on Monday for the Jackets were Megan Koester (97), Megan Hallstrom (100) and Anna Sunderman (100).

Cambridge-Isanti shot its previous lowest 18-hole round of 377 to place 5th at the Mississippi 8 Girls Golf finals hosted May 22 at Fox Hollow GC. That score allowed the Bluejackets to tie St. Michael-Albertville for 4th place in the final team standings.

Buffalo, led by Lexi Bollant’s 5-under 67, held off Becker to defend their M-8 team title by 4 points in the season standings.
