Braham Baseball opens playoffs with 6-3 win

It took a bit to get going, but top-seed Braham rallied for a 6-3 victory over No. 8 seed Onamia in the Section 5A East Subsection quarterfinals held May 25 at Rush City. Nick Hammond threw four solid innings of relief, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 7 to earn the win on the mound.

Down 3-0 after 3 1/2 innnings, the Bombers got on the board against the Panthers when Cory Ambrose and Jamin Storlie both walked and scored to make it 3-2, with Kevin Strelow singling home Storlie. Braham took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Hammond singled, Storlie walked and the two runners scored when the Panthers sailed a throw over first base following a bunt attempt.

Tyler Vaughan and Corey Grell tacked on insurance RBIs later that inning for the 6-3 final.

The Bombers are still waiting to see who they will be playing in the 5A East Subsections semifinals. No. 4 Ogilvie and No. 5 Pillager had their May 28 makeup game rained out, so they will try again at 2 p.m. in Pierz on May 29. Braham gets the winner for a 5 p.m. start time on May 29 on the Pierz field.

Also alive in the 5A East are No. 2 Isle (10-1 over Rush City) and No. 6 Royalton (6-4 over Hinckley-Fin.). Teams alive in the 5A West are Browerville vs. Kimball, and St. John’s Prep vs. defending section champ Eden Valley-Watkins.
