Contact elected officials to voice support for library funding

Dear Editor:

The Board of Directors of the Friends of the Cambridge Public Library would like to thank the businesses and individuals who have contributed to help make up the budget deficit created when Isanti County cut its share of the 2012 budget for the East Central Regional Library system, which includes the Cambridge Public Library. The budget cut required a reduction in staff hours and opening hours at the library. This included closing the library on Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

We have received sufficient contributions to keep the library open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays during the summer.

The Friends Board believes it is essential that library services be available on Saturdays throughout the year, especially since the library has only been open two evenings during the week since budget reductions were implemented. For people who work Monday through Friday, Saturday is frequently their day for shopping and doing errands. Those errands may include returning library materials, checking out library materials, or using the computers and internet service. The Cambridge business community would also benefit if the library is open on Saturdays because visiting the library would be an additional reason for coming to Cambridge.

Over the next several months, the Isanti County Commissioners will be developing the 2013 county budget. Please contact your Commissioner and let him or her know how you use the library and why you believe library services are important for the community.  Information on contacting the commissioners is available on the Isanti County website at and click on “Elected Officials.” Voice your support for the Cambridge Public Library to help ensure that it is fully funded in 2013.
