Operation Round Up distributes more than $20,800 to local organizations

East Central Energy (ECE) members’ monthly donations to Operation Round Up® (ORU) recently helped 11 local organizations meet their program needs.

More than $20,800 was dispersed when the ORU Trust Board met in April to review grant applications. The Trust Board is made up of members who are appointed by the ECE Board of Directors to administer the Trust and represent their fellow cooperative members in determining how the money is used.

Grants distributed in the spring cycle will help with a variety of projects, from energy-efficient lighting and park renovations to materials needed to make quilts for shelters and treatment centers.

Isanti County recipients are:

• The Refuge Network, Cambridge, $2,710 to help purchase materials for in-floor heat in the basement children’s room at the Network’s domestic abuse shelter.

• Isanti County Agricultural Society, Cambridge, $2,000, to use toward additional lighting at the county fairgrounds.

• Friends of the Cambridge Public Library, $450 to purchase supplies for the summer reading program.

ECE established the ORU Trust in 1997 as a convenient, low-cost way for members to donate to local charitable organizations. Members who participate agree to have their monthly electric bill rounded up to the next dollar. The average annual contribution for members who participate is $6; the maximum annual donation through the round-up process is $11.88.

ECE members who would like to join their fellow members in supporting the Operation Round Up program can sign up by checking the box at the bottom of their bill or by calling 1-800-254-7944. Community organizations which serve ECE members can contact Julie Johnson, 763-689-8046, if they are interested in applying to the ORU Trust.
