Local students selected for Rural Electric Tour

Sara Tomlinson and Sam De Gregoire will represent East Central Energy (ECE) on the 2012 Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C.

Sara, a junior at Braham Area High School, is the daughter of Dave and Kathy Tomlinson of Braham. Sam is the son of Janice and Sherman Sandberg of Ogilvie. He is an 11th grader attending Anoka Ramsey Community College on the Post-Secondary Education Option (PSEO).

Sara and Sam will travel to our nation’s capital as ECE’s delegates June 16-21 with students representing other Minnesota electric co-ops. The trip provides an opportunity for them to discuss the issues of today with their elected officials.

It highlights the democratic principles of American government and their place in the structure of rural electric cooperatives. Students experience the monuments and museums that honor America’s heroes, and they make new friends from around the country.

High school juniors and seniors whose parents or guardians are ECE members were eligible to apply for the Youth Tour.

As part of the application process, the students wrote an essay describing ECE’s commitment to community and explaining what they personally do to play an active role in their community.

Finalists were chosen to be interviewed based on their essay, and the top two students emerged from the interviews.
