A great day was had by Bluejacket Boys Tennis at the Mississippi 8 Conference Tournament when six-of-eight positions medaled at Saturday’s action hosted by Monticello and St. Michael-Albertville.

“All positions have earned team points for us throughout the conference season, and the depth of our success on the courts in the conference tournament shows their growth throughout the season,” said an elated C-I Coach Thea Lowman.

The Bluejackets earned two 2nd places in Singles by Marshall White at No. 1 and Sam Renier at No. 2. White opened play with a 6-1, 6-1 win, then he paid back Dilly of Becker with an amazing three-set win in the semis 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5).

“I’m proud of Marshall’s patient yet aggressive play and mental toughness during this match. His experience from countless matches and tournaments he’s played throughout his high school career showed on the court today,” said Coach Lowman.

After that long battle, White fell to St. Michael’s Shustarich 6-1, 6-0 in the championship.

Renier began the M-8 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory then held tough in a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1) workout against STMA’s Robak. In the finals, Becker’s Toedter prevailed 6-0, 6-3.

“Sam has grown into a confident singles player who constructs smart points,” noted Coach Lowman. “He will slug it out from the baseline but attacks opportunity balls and will control the point from the net as well.”

• The Bluejackets had all four of their doubles pairings win consolation titles at the M-8 Tourney. At No. 1, Matt Olson & Calvin Cicha held in a nail-biting final match 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

At No. 2, Josh Fredlund and Devin Gislason also had a battle in their last match, coming out on top 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2). At No. 3, Destin Modina & Thomas Phillips ended their Saturday with a 7-5, 6-4 win. At No. 4 Doubles, Derick DeMars & Mike Colbaugh got to the net well to win in the consolation finals.

Also at Singles, Derek Belford went 1-2 for 4th place at No. 4, winning his first match  6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

7AA Team Tennis begins next week

The Section 7AA playoffs kick off next week with the South Subsection Team Tourney going May 21-22 and the Individual Subsections May 24 at St. Francis (seeding coming this weekend). The Bluejackets split matches against two 7AA foes this past week, defeating St. Francis 6-1 and falling to Andover 5-2.

Against the Saints May 10, winning at Singles for C-I were  White (7-5, 6-4), Renier (6-1, 6-0) and Nate Henderson (6-3, 6-1). Taking Doubles matches were  Olson & Cicha (6-0, 6-0), Fredlund & Gislason (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) and Colbaugh & DeMars (6-3, 6-4).

Against Andover, Olson & Cicha won at No. 1 Doubles 6-0, 7-5. At No. 3 Doubles, Modina & Phillips were down 2-5 in the third set and battled back to take the set 7-5.  “Destin and Thomas have both really grown as players and as a doubles team this season.  They are communicating well and have developed dangerous passing shots,” analyzed Coach Lowman. “It’s likely we could see Andover again the first round of the playoffs, which we would look forward to.”

Leading teams in the 7AA South are Elk River (25-0), Chisago Lakes (11-3) and Forest Lake 8-5).
