Braham Baseball picked up a pair of non-conference victories the past week to improve its overall record to 8-3 on the season, keeping them among the win leaders in the Section 5A standings.
On May 7, the Bombers held for an efficient 3-2 win over visiting Barnum on the home field. Starting pitcher Casey Grell gave up a leadoff triple which turned into a run for the northern Bombers, then he settled in to toss a great complete game.
He helped his cause by singling and scoring to tie the game at 1-1 in the first. Braham got two gift runs in the third when a two-out fly to left was droppped, allowing them to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the fourth, Barnum scratched out a run on a leadoff walk and later sacrifice fly.
After that walk, Grell ended up retiring 15 straight batters including notching a “mow em’ down” fifth inning where he struck out the side with his curve ball. Tyler Vaughan helped out his pitcher with a nice running catch in the left-center gap in the top of the sixth.
“Casey did a great job keeping the Barnum kids off-balance with his mix and finished with seven strikeouts,” complimented Braham Coach Aitor Leniz.
The Bombers finished with just 4 hits in the win as the Barnum pitcher forced several groundball outs with the wind blowing in from center over the soft field.
• On May 5, Braham rallied for a 6-5 home win over Legacy Christian, with Nick Hammond getting the win on the mound.
• Braham’s May 3 home game with Hinckley-Finlayson was rescheduled to May 17 due to wet field conditions. Likewise, the annual night game set for May 8 at Rush City was post-poned; no make-up date set yet.
The Bombers need a strong run this week to stay in the GRC race with conference games against East Central May 10, Onamia May 14 and Pine City May 15.
