On Friday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in the Cambridge-Isanti High School gymnasium, a pep fest will be held to celebrate Tony Nelson’s national wrestling championship won for the U of M Golden Gophers. Tony is a former class valedictorian, three-sport athlete and proud 2009 Bluejacket graduate. Cambridge Mayor Marlys Palmer will be on hand to proclaim April 27, 2012 as “Tony Nelson Day.”
Tony and U of M Coach Luke Becker will sign autographs from 2:50 to 3:15 p.m. A Tony Nelson ‘Meet and Greet’ will then be held at Cambridge Pizza Hut from 8 to 9 p.m. that night.
The 2012 fund drive to build a second youth baseball field at Athens Township’s Mann Park complex is underway, reported organizer Russ Mann. Community organizations are being contacted, and a Minnesota Twins “Field of Dreams” grant has been submitted.
The field will be a little larger than the first beautiful diamond built behind Athens Town Hall. Mann is creatively recycling the old backstop from Pine Village and the lights from Castle Park in Anoka to help keep costs down. Parties interested in donating to the project can contact him at 612-968-0125.
