C-I swats Hornets 5-2

Sam Renier swung past his Big Lake foe 6-1, 6-4 for a win at No. 2 Singles April 17.

Bluejacket boys tennis evened their Mississippi 8 record at 1-1 by holding off visiting Big Lake 5-2 on a crisp April 17.

Marshall White dictated play throughout for a 6-1, 6-0 win at 1st Singles. More singles wins came from Sam Renier (6-1, 6-4) and Nate Henderson (6-3, 6-2). At 1st Doubles, Matt Olson & Calvin Cicha prevailed 6-0, 6-4. Then at 2nd Doubles it was Christian Utecht & Josh Fredlund holding for a 6-1, 6-2 win.

“One of our goals is to show improvement with each match, which we did today. Our doubles teams communicated well and showed improvement with their court positioning. Our singles players showed confidence with their point construction,” described C-I Coach Thea Lowman.

Buffalo 4, C-I 3

The Bluejackets opened the Mississippi 8 season with a close loss to host Buffalo April 12. Posting wins for C-I were Marshall White (6-2, 7-6) and Nate Henderson (6-3, 6-2) in Singles, and the No. 2 Doubles set of Christian Utecht & Josh Fredlund (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).

“At 1st Singles, Marshall White dug in in the second set when his opponent started playing more patiently, pulling it out in an 8-6 tie-break,” commented C-I Coach Thea Lowman. “At 4th Singles, Nate Henderson’s consistency and attacking of opportunity balls defeated his opponent.”
