C-I Speech finishes strong, advances 4 to State
Nine seniors have led a strong Speech team at Cambridge-Isanti High School this year. As a team, they have collected three sweepstakes trophies, two 2nd-place trophies, and earned the Mississippi 8 Academic Team trophy.
This year’s seniors have all finished their season strong. They are Katie Skalicky (Informative), Sydney Johnson and Hannah Palmer (Ext. Reading), Adam Heinen and Adam Guptill (Discussion), Jonathan Wells and Kaila Farnsworth (Drama), Madelyn Gunderson (Poetry), and Jessica Peters (Prose). All of them have been a huge reason for the success of the team, not only for their individual performances but for their continuing support of the team.
Three of them have been on the varsity team for six years: Wells, Palmer, and Gunderson. Four of them are captains: Palmer, Wells, Peters, and Gunderson. And two of them will be representing Section 7AA at the State tournament.
Advancing to the MSHSL State Speech Tournament are seniors Madelyn Gunderson who placed 2nd in Poetry, Adam Guptill who placed 2nd in Discussion, as well as junior Adam Peterson who placed 3rd in Creative Expression and sophomore Megan Hovinen who place 2nd in Drama. This is the second State trip for Guptill, Hovinen, and Gunderson.
The Class AA State tournament will be held on Saturday, April 21 at Chanhassen High School. The public is welcome to attend. Also advancing to section finals were Jordan Zurn in Prose and Isabelle Barrett in Poetry.
Making up the rest of the 40 member team are: Mackenzie Kruse, Kelsey Lynn, Ellen Troolin, and Amanda Paris in Creative; Christian DeMars in Discussion; Maddie Hovinen in Drama; Jenny Taray, Lyndsey Moore, Katrina Barnes, Mitchell Tillges, Jake Fixell, and Hannah Thiry in Duo; Nicole Bergman, Jami Zacharias, Emily Abraham, Miranda Cain in Poetry; Sam Olson in Ext. Speaking; Kalli Beaulieu, Sam Peters, Kevin Pemble, and Mikaela Kase in Humorous; Jenny Skalicky in Informative; Emily Moore in Original; Tristen Sima, Sarah Titus, and Sophia Wahlstrom in Prose; and Tanner Hagen in Storytelling.
With the legacy of the leadership that the seniors leave behind, the team is in good shape for the coming years. The team is coached by Kelly Fairchild-Fahrni and assistants Fran McGivern and Lori Shoberg. The Varsity Speech season runs from November-April and is open to students in grades 7-12.
