SPRING SEASON OPENERS
Cambridge-Isanti Baseball took down defending Mississippi 8 champ Buffalo with a huge 5-2 road win in eight innings April 10. Senior Cole Bakke earned his second win of the season by striking out 12 while going the distance, holding the Bison to 3 hits.
“Cole competed like heck out there. He just kept going after guys and got stronger as the game went on,” exclaimed C-I Coach Todd Smrekar. “He set down Buffalo in order in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings on just 18 pitches.”
Bakke also scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth after coaxing a one-out walk and stealing second. Ryan Miller laced a double to the wall to score Bakke, then Clayton Jennissen followed with a two-run bomb over the left-center wall for insurance runs. Ryan Epsen (3 hits) delivered a two-run single to put C-I ahead in the fourth inning.

C-I Boys Golf 2nd at Bulldog Invite
The Bluejackets broke into the 2012 season with a solid 2nd-place showing at the April 9 Bulldog Invite at Pebble Creek. C-I’s 329 was eclipsed only by Detroit Lakes’ 308 but was better than five other Mississippi 8 teams at the event.
“Austin Galligan fired a meet career-low 79 in his first varsity match (good for 5th place). He has worked hard on his game in the off-season and it was great to see it pay off for him,” noted C-I Coach Mike Hennen. “Nate Cox fired an 82 in his first varsity meet which was also a good score in the wind and cold. The newcomers played well, along with veteran Matt Swanson (81).”
C-I Girls Golf 9th at Monticello Invite
Emily Sunderman shot a 92, Megan Koester a 98, Anna Sunderman an 101, and Brittany Minar carded an 103 when the Cambridge-Isanti girls golf team placed 9th at the 17-team Monticello Invite on April 4.
“It was a good start for first meet of season. The girls have been working on their short game this spring and hopefully that will continue to bring scores down throughout the year,” said C-I Coach Steve Hanson.
• On April 10, the C-I girls finished 6th at the Mississippi 8 opener hosted on Becker’s Pebble Creek. Coach Steve Hanson: “It was a cold, windy day at Pebble Creek, but the girls hung in there and posted a decent score. Leah Schoenecker shot a very nice 45 that included an eagle. Anna Sunderman 47, Megan Hallstrom 52, and Megan Koester 53 rounded out the scoring.”
