Owls split games over weekend

Owls 6,  Maple Grove Energy: 4

The Owls continued their push to the playoffs when they faced the Maple Grove Energy on Friday night. The Owls started off strong with a power play goal by TJ Belisle (Nick Ernst, Sheldon Kihle) 2:23 into the first. Taylor Bargar (Nick Ernst, TJ Belisle) double the lead at 5:02 but the Energy scored with 40 seconds left in the first to pull back within one heading into the first intermission.

The Energy tied the game at 7:59 of the second but Kyle Johnson scored unassisted on the powerplay at 14:03 to give the Owls the lead once again.

The Energy came out fast in the third and their hard play was rewarded with the tying goal at 1:00 minute. Jess “Bubba” Engquist (Blake Jorenby, Sheldon Kihle) gave the Owls the lead again at 10:51 but the Energy were persistent and once again pulled even at 15:05. The back and forth play continued until finally TJ Belisle (Kyle Johnson, Jess “Bubba” Engquist) scored the eventual game winner with 1 ½ minutes left in the game. Jess “Bubba” Engquist then put the game out of reach with an empty net goal at 19:51 from center ice.

Goalie/Saves: Brad Jerzewski was in net turning away 27 of 31 shots to earn the victory.

Crusaders 4, Owls 1  

Saturday night the Owls travelled to Hudson looking to extend their third place lead over the Crusaders. It was a close first period that was back and forth with both goaltenders making several key saves. The Crusaders broke the tie at 11:58 of the first and despite several scoring opportunities the Owls weren’t able to burry the puck in the net.

Hudson extended their lead with a power play goal 23 seconds into the second on the power play and took at three goal lead just 2 minutes later. Kolton Kahoot (Nick Ernst, Sheldon Kihle) scored on the power play at 6:26 to pull the Owls to within two heading into the third period.

The Owls couldn’t get any sustained offense in the third and the Crusaders put the game out of reach with a goal at 15:02.

Despite the loss the Owls still remain comfortably in third place 9 points ahead of Hudson.

Goalie/Saves: Austin Campbell was in net turning away 28 of 32 shots.

Upcoming Games: The Owls next home game is Friday Feb. 17th , 2012 against the Dells Ducks. Game time is 7:30 P.M. at the David C. Johnson arena in Isanti.
