C-I Wrestlers seeded No. 2 in stacked field: Cambridge-Isanti (24-5) earned the No. 2 seed for this week’s Section 7AAA Team Tourney which has five teams ranked in the top-15 of Class AAA wrestling this season. The quarterfinals, semis and championship matches will all be held on Friday, Feb. 17 at St. Michael-Albertville H.S.
The Bluejackets, ranked 4th in Class AAA, will open action in the 4 p.m. quarterfinal match against No. 7 seed Elk River (5-15). Also in that half of the brackets, No. 3 seed Coon Rapids (23-8, ranked 6th) will open against No. 6 Blaine. The semis will follow at 6 p.m., with the finals scheduled for 8 p.m. The Bluejackets and Coon Rapids tied 30-30 in a close dual meet back on Dec. 10.
On Thursday night, No. 8 Andover hosts No. 9 St. Francis, with the winner to take on the top-seed STMA Knights (24-6, ranked 3rd) in the quarters. The final quarterfinal matchup will be No. 4 Forest Lake (16-6, ranked 7th) vs. No. 5 Anoka (11-14, ranked 14th).
The Knights are the two-time defending champs in 7AAA, finishing runner-up to Apple Valley both seasons at State. The Bluejackets are pursuing their 13th all-time State berth.
Bluejackets sweep Saint Triangular
The Bluejackets closed out the regular season Feb. 10, defeating host St. Francis 66-6 and Stillwater 39-21. Against the Saints, Cambridge-Isanti rocked behind falls from Tommy Guy (106), Nate Medin (120), Ben Hartnett (126), Tyler Tischer (132), Robbie Phillips (136), and Cody Skog (152), with tech falls coming from Ty Torgerson (145) and Travis Holt (160).
Stillwater led 15-9 after the 145 match, then the Bluejackets got on a roll. Codie Auren took a 7-2 decision at 152, and Holt and Russel Laboe put C-I ahead 24-15 with pins. Consecutive tech falls were racked up by Jennissen, Kyle Chromy and Trent Chromy to put away the win.
