Jacket Wrestling seeded No. 2 for 7AAA Tourney

WEEKEND SPORTS: Cambridge-Isanti (24-5) earned the No. 2 seed for this week’s Section 7AAA Team Tourney. The Bluejackets, ranked 4th in Class AAA, will open action on Friday, Feb. 17 (4 p.m.) with the quarterfinal match against No. 7 Elk River (5-15) at St. Michael-Albertville.

Also in that half of the brackets, No. 3 seed Coon Rapids (23-8, ranked 6th) will open against No. 6 Blaine. The semis will follow at 6 p.m. Friday night at STMA H.S., with the finals scheduled for 8 p.m.

On Thursday night, No. 8 Andover hosts No. 9 St. Francis, with the winner to take on the top-seed STMA Knights (24-6, ranked 3rd) in the quarterfinals. The final quarterfinal matchup will be No. 4 Forest Lake (16-6, ranked 7th) vs. No. 5 Anoka (11-14, ranked 14th). The Knights are the two-time defending champs in 7AAA.

• The Bluejackets closed out the regular season Feb. 10, defeating host St. Francis 66-6 and Stillwater 39-21.

Braham-RC Wrestlers seeded 6th in 7AA South

The Braham-Rush City wrestling team was seeded 6th in the south half of the Section 7AA Team tourney. The Tigers (3-6) face South No. 3 Chisago Lakes (17-9) for the Tuesday, Feb. 14 quarterfinals (5 p.m.) at Milaca. The winner then takes on No. 2 Mora (14-11) at 7 p.m. in the 7AA quarterfinals, also at Milaca.

Milaca (25-9) was seeded No. 1 in the 7AA South; the Wolves will take on the pig-tail winner between No. 4 North Branch and No. 5 Hinckley-Pine City.

Grand Rapids (16-4) got the No. 1 seed for the 7AA North. Hibbing (12-16) is the North No. 2, and Nashwauk is the 3rd seed.

Quarterfinal winners from Tuesday night will head to Nashwauk for the Friday, Feb. 17 semis and finals which begin at 5 p.m.

Braham Boys Basketball 76, Pierz 62

The Bombers upped their season record to 20-1 by holding off visiting Pierz in non-conference action Saturday night. Leading scorers for Braham were Tyler Vaughan (28), Anthony Bias (18), Shaun Hollenkamp (14) and Cameron Braund (7). Vaughan also led on the boards with 13 rebounds and added 7 assists.

St. Michael-Alb. 4, C-I Boys Hockey 3

Bluejacket senior Brennan Osen scored 23 seconds into the Feb. 11 conference battle with St. Michael-Albertville, but the Knights fought back to win the Mississippi 8 game. Peter Storlie’s power play goal had C-I leading 2-1 early in the second period, but STMA answered with two goals in that stanza and led 4-2 four minutes into the third period. Osen delivered a power-play goal with four minutes remaining to cut the Knight lead to 4-3.

Monticello 71, C-I Boys Basketball 69 OT

The Magic sunk the game-winner with 1.1 seconds left in the first overtime session to sweep the Bluejackets in the Mississippi 8 boys basketball series this season. Leading scorers for Cambridge-Isanti were Tom Selz (21), Jonah Poppen (12) and Matt Swanson (10).
