STMA Knights rally to defeat C-I Wrestlers

FRIDAY NIGHT SPORTS: In the key match to determine the 2012 Mississippi 8 Wrestling champions, host St. Michael-Albertville rallied from a 28-21 deficit by winning the last three matches, getting past Cambridge-Isanti 34-28. The Knights are ranked 4th in Class AAA, the Jackets ranked 6th.

STMA opened with a 21-3 lead after the first five matches which included pins by top-ranked Tommy Thorn at 113 and Mark Voss at 132. Senior Robbie Phillips began the Jacket rally with a surprising pin at 138 after being down to Lincoln Mallinger 7-1. Ty Torgerson followed with a 3-1 decision over Wayne Voss, then Travis Holt and Cody Skog worked for tech falls at 152 and 160. After Cole Bakke won 10-5 at 170 and Clayton Jennissen won 5-0 at 182, the Bluejackets gained the 28-21 edge.

Ranked Knight Mark Eull earned a third-period fall at 195, then STMA led 31-28 when reserve 220-pounder Bennie Wilson took a 14-5 major. Third-ranked Mark Kessler held the advantage with a 5-0 shutout at 285.

Braham Girls Basketball 63, Minnetonka 49

The Bombers, ranked 4th in Class AA, knocked off the Class 4A 8th-ranked Skippers in the Jan. 20 non-conference game at Braham. It was a payback game since Minnetonka gave the Bombers one of their two losses last season.

Cambridge-Isanti Girls Basketball 76, Becker 51

In the Jacket home double-header with the boys varsity Jan. 20, the C-I girls improved to 3-2 in M-8 games by rolling past the Bulldogs. Brynn Liljander led the way with 24 points, with additional scoring help coming from Natalie Larson (11), Paige Muehlhauser (11) and Whitney Olson (10).

Becker 66, C-I Boys Basketball 65

The Jan. 20 double-header opener saw the Bulldogs keep the Bluejacket boys winless in the Mississippi 8 with the one-point victory. Four Jackets scored in double-figures: Matt Swanson (14), Jonah Poppen (13), Tom Selz (12) and Hunter Vavra (10).
