Hastings will be moving up in the Class AAA wrestling rankings after defeating No. 5 Cambridge-Isanti 26-23 the opening round of St. Cloud Tech’s Kiffmeyer Duals Jan. 14. The Raiders, ranked 7th, went on to beat No. 2 Albert Lea in the semis and No. 4 St. Michael-Albertville 26-24 in the championship bout of the rugged tourney.
C-I’s Tommy Guy took a 10-9 decision at 106 and Ty Tischer won a 9-0 major at 126, but the Raiders owned a 16-7 advantage after the 138 match. The Bluejackets rallied with a 9-7 Ty Torgerson decision at 145, a 16-7 Travis Holt major at 152 and a 10-3 Cody Skog decision at 160 to lead 17-16. Clayton Jennissen’s 4-0 decision at 182 had the Jackets ahead again at 20-19, but Hastings got a 4-1 decision at 195 and an 11-0 major at 220 to create a 6-point lead. Jon Knowlton then rang up an 8-1 decision at 285 to close out the close battle.
The C-I boys next defeated Sauk Rapids 51-18 in the consolation semis behind pins from Cole Bakke (170), Kyle Willette (182), Kyle Chromy (195) and Trent Chromy (220). The Bluejackets finished in 5th place by knocking off St. Cloud Apollo 56-22, showcased by pins from Torgerson (145), Holt (152), Bakke (170) and T. Chromy (195).
The Jacket JV won their half of the Kiffmeyer tourney, beating Foley 35-25 in the championship.
• The Bluejackets improved to 3-0 in Mississippi 8 duals with a 71-3 rout of visiting Big Lake Jan. 13. The C-I boys next travel to the STMA Knights Jan. 20 for the pivotal M-8 match of the season. On Saturday, the team will host the C-I Duals with 3rd-ranked Forest Lake among the five teams coming to town.
