River Hawks beat Bluejacket girls
North Wright County remained in control of Mississippi 8 girls hockey with a 7-1 win over Cambridge-Isanti-Mora-Pine City Jan. 10. Shelby Slylvester had the Jackets leading 1-0 late in the first period, but the River Hawks put up a five-pack in the second.
Coach Jeff McCann: “We once again started out the game with a strong first period. We were moving our feet and getting strong goaltending. Shelby Sylvester got a nice feed from Alex Nelson and got us on the board first with a nice backhand upper corner shot. In the second period we got away from our systems, and it cost us on the scoreboard. They were a fast team, good with the puck and were able to get past our D a few times and also scored on a couple of soft goals. I sure liked the way the girls finished strong in the third. We got back to what we do well by moving our feet and out-working the opponent.”
CIMPC 2, St. Francis 2
In a rivalry home match with the Saints Jan. 7, Holly Guerin put the Jackets on the board with a second-period goal. The Saints rallied to take the lead, but Carly Armstrong scored the tying goal with 1:10 left in regulation.
“Scoring that late goal was big for us because this was a game against a Section 7AA team where we are battling hard to get one of the top four seeds in section playoffs,” commented CIMPC Coach Jeff McCann.
