Holiday matinee: Bluejacket Hockey rips Vikings 6-1

Senior defenseman Sam Renier broke a 0-0 deadlock with an end-to-end rush culiminated with a goal off a quick wrist shot with 1:07 left in the first period, and the Cambridge-Isanti boys hockey team kept rolling to a 6-1 win over visiting North Branch Dec. 29.

Senior Skye Hunt-Schuft gets congrats for his goal which made it 2-0 in the first period against the Vikings.

Just 19 seconds after Renier’s goal, Skye Hunt-Schuft lifted the puck over the Viking goalie for a 2-0 lead heading into the first break. Brennan Osen delivered two C-I goals in the second period, with additional goals coming from Kurtis Grimm and Colton Miller. The Jackets outshot North Branch 64-20 in the non-conference battle.

The Bluejackets (3-6) host Windom Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. to continue their holiday break set of games.

Braham Boys Basketball 64, St. Cloud Cathedral 55

The Bombers reached the championship of the Crusader Classic after defeating host St. Cloud Cathedral 64-55 in the Dec. 29 semis. Braham (7-1) takes on Mandan, ND in the 4 p.m. finals.

Duluth Marshall 55, C-I Boys Basketball 48

The Hightoppers overcame 25 turnovers to get past Cambridge-Isanti late in the Dec. 29 consolation championship of the Hibbing Holiday Tournament. Duluth Marshall’s work on the boards (39-21 rebounding edge) gave the team the second chances it needed. The Bluejackets (2-8) were led in scoring by Matt Swanson (18), Tom Selz (10), Jordan Schleicher (7) and Hunter Vavra (7).

Bluejacket Wrestlers 5th after Day 1 at Rumble on Red

Cambridge-Isanti was placed 5th out of 28 teams after the first day of wrestling at the Fargo’s Rumble on the Red individual invite. The Bluejackets totaled 120 points, not far off Day 1 leader Albert Lea (137.5).

Leading the Bluejackets and still alive in the winners’ brackets were Ty Tischer (2 pins, major), Cody Skog (1 pin, major, dec), Ty Torgerson, Travis Holt (3 pins, OT dec) and Clayton Jennissen (3 pins).
