Bluejackets earn 5 medals at MN Christmas Tourney
The Cambridge-Isanti wrestlers had five members medal at the rugged Minnesota Christmas Tourney hosted in Rochester last weekend.
The Bluejackets placed 9th with 117.5 points at the tourney. Apple Valley (291.5), Simley (197.5) and St. Michael-Albertville (181) owned the top three spots. C-I’s section partners Forest Lake (7th, 125.5) and Coon Rapids (11th, 34101) also cracked the top 15 amid the 34 teams competing.
Cody Skog (12-3 on season) led the Jackets with a 3rd place at 160. He opened with a 9-2 decision and two first-period pins before Jackson Co.’s Vancura slipped by him with an 8-6 decision. Skog rallied with two more decisions, including a 16-5 major over White Bear Lake’s Anderson in the 3rd-place match.
Clayton Jennissen at 182 and Travis Holt at 152 both placed 4th for the Bluejackets. Jennissen began the tourney with a pin and two decisions before West Fargo’s Lehmann got an 8-4 decision in the semis. Jennissen (12-2) won one more decision before Apple Valley’s Woiwor prevailed 6-3 in the 3rd-place match.
Holt (11-2) opened with a pin and two tight decisions to reach the 152 semis where Scott West’s Fogarty took a 14-2 major. Holt added one more win, then Simley’s Wanzek won the 3rd-place match 9-2.
Ty Tischer at 126 and Ty Togerson at 145 worked for 5th-place medals at the Xmas. Tischer (13-3) fell 2-1 in his opening match but rallied with five straight wins in the consolation brackets, including three pins. His final win was a 14-4 major over Stewartville’s Stolarzyk in the 5th-place bout.
Torgerson racked up two first-period pins to start his tourney before getting caught in the quarterfinals. Torgerson (8-2) came back with a tech fall and two more decisions in the consolations, stopping Anoka’s Beaman 6-5 in the 5th-place match.
More leading Jacket wrestlers at the Christmas Tourney were Travis Swanson (3-2 at 113), Tommy Guy (2-2 at 106), and Dakota Johnson (2-2 at 220).
