Bluejacket girls tame the Tigers

BASKETBALL ROUND-UP: Cambridge-Isanti got off to a 1-0 start in Mississippi 8 girls basketball by holding off visiting Rogers 52-51 Dec. 15. Junior Paige Muehlhauser led the Bluejackets with 25 points, including sinking 1-of-2 free throws late to break a 51-51 tie. The Royals had two last field goal attempts which bounced off the rim on their final possession.

Muehlhauser made 9-of-11 shots from the field during her career-high night of scoring, and she doubled up with 10 rebounds. More Bluejackets adding significant numbers were Natalie Larson (10 points/6 rebounds) and Emily Holboy (6 points).

• On Saturday, the Bluejackets rolled to a 41-17 halftime lead before posting a 70-34 victory over host Princeton. Whitney Olson sunk 5 three-pointers and led the Bluejackets with 23 points. Brynn Liljander contributed 15 points and 4 assists. Emily Holboy worked for 8 points and 10 rebounds inside. Adding more points for C-I were Justine Larson (6) and Natalie Larson (5).

• On Dec. 20, section-partner Forest Lake opened with a 21-9 lead and defeated the C-I girls 60-49. Leading the Bluejackets in scoring were Whitney Olson (14), Paige Muehlhauser (12) and Brynn Liljander (10).

Braham Boys 55, Grantsburg 44

The Bombers enjoyed a tight win over the host Pirates Dec. 15 with another strong defensive night, forcing 23 turnovers and making 11 steals (Tyler Vaughan led with 4 steals). Vaughan also dished 13 assists and doubled with 14 points. Shaun Hollencamp added a career-high 18 points, Anthony Bias scored 10, and Cameron Braund led with 7 rebounds in the win.

• The Bombers raised their Great River record to 3-0 by rolling past host Ogilvie 95-28 Dec. 20. Cameron Braund shot 11-of-16 from the field to pace Braham with 22 points; he also grabbed 6 boards and made 6 steals. Tyler Vaughan posted the triple-double with 18 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. Also putting up numbers were Anthony Bias (19 points) and Shaun Hollencamp (11 points).

The host Knights led 30-20 at the half and kept pulling away in the second half en route to a non-conference victory over Cambridge-Isanti Dec. 16. Jordan Schleicher and Hunter Vavra both scored 9 points to pace the Bluejackets, with Tom Selz scoring 7 and Nate Cox 5. Matt Swanson led on the boards with 7 rebounds, with both Schleicher and Selz producing 5 rebounds.

• On Dec. 20, St. Michael-Albertville opened the Mississippi 8 schedule with a 78-60 home win over the Bluejackets, getting four players scoring in double figures. Leading the Jacket scorers were Tom Selz (17), Hunter Vavra (10), Jordan Schleicher (8), and Jonah Poppen (8).
