Bluejackets take 2nd to St. Michael at Cardinal Invite
It’s going to be another full wrestling season of the 7th-ranked Cambridge-Isanti boys squaring off against 2nd-ranked St. Michael-Albertville. The Knights bested the Bluejackets 40-28 in the opening salvo which took place in the finals of Saturday’s Coon Rapids Invitational.
STMA opened the battle with a 19-0 lead after four matches, highlighted by top-ranked Tommy Thorn’s pin at 120. Tyler Tischer then got C-I on the board with a 3-2 triple-overtime win over 7th-ranked Mark Voss at 132. After STMA’s Lincoln Mallinger held off Robbie Phillips 5-4 at 138, Jacket junior Ty Torgerson worked for a 6-0 decision at 145.
“I was real impressed with both Tylers, how they wrestled the whole match,” said C-I Coach Neil Jennissen.
Travis Holt at 152 and Cody Skog at 160 continued the Jacket rally with first-period falls. Cole Bakke followed with an 11-4 decision at 170. Clayton Jennissen then got six points for injury default when STMA’s Ricky Briggs pulled something in his shoulder trying to move Jennissen. That had the Jackets take their first lead 28-22.
But then a little mat learning took place in the latter bouts when C-I’s Kyle Chromy got caught in a pin after leading the whole 182 match. Top-ranked Knight Nick Eding followed with a pin at 220, then 3rd-ranked Michael Kessler at 285 clinched the win with a second-period pin over C-I’s Jon Knowlton in a 0-0 match.
The Bluejackets could face certain Knights again at this weekend’s big Minnesota Christmas Invite in Rochester. Both teams will be at the Jan. 14 Kiffmeyer Duals just before the potential conference-deciding match at St. Michael Jan. 20.
Tie-breaker over C.Rapids
The Bluejackets enjoy another close rivalry with 5th-ranked Coon Rapids, another tough Section 7AAA squad. Those teams met in the semis on Saturday in a 30-30 match, with the Bluejackets advancing on the strength of the eighth tie-breaker criteria– most first points scored (8-6).
Travis Swanson’s 4-1 decision at 113 were the Jackets’ lone early points when CR led 13-3. Tischer got a pin at 132, as did Torgerson at 145 to pull C-I to within 16-15. Consecutive wins by Holt (10-7), Skog (13-3 major), Bakke (16-5 major) and Jennissen (14-4 major) pushed C-I ahead 30-16. But the Cardinals rallied with a pin at 220 and a controversial 11-3 major at 285 to force the tie-breaking match.
“This is a good, intense rivalry. Coon Rapids did a great job fighting off back points in some of the matches where we just couldn’t get the big pin,” said Coach Jennissen.
The Jackets day at the invite began with a 48-22 win over Mounds View. Falls were gained by Swanson at 113, Ben Hartnett at 126, C.J. Schlichtman at 145, Russel Laboe at 160 and Derrick DeMars at 285.
C-I Triangular Dec. 8
The Bluejackets (9-2 all) opened the Mississippi 8 season with a 65-12 win over Buffalo on Thursday. The Jackets received pins from Phillips at 138, Holt at 152, Skog at 160 and Jennissen at 182, along with five Bison forfeits.
The nightcap saw C-I top Champlin Park 43-36 on the strength of pins from Tommy Guy (20 seconds), Swanson, Monty Frederiksen, Tanner Torgerson, and Ty Torgerson (24 seconds).
Late Fall Sports Award note: C-I senior QB Clayton Jennissen was named to the 2011 AP Honorable Mention All-State Team.
