The Bluejacket Gymnasts scored 138.1 points, placing just behind host Perham’s 138.8 at the Dec. 3 invitational up north to open the 2012 season. The Yellow Jackets are the eight-time defending Class A gymnastics champs.
“Hoping to finish in the top half of the talented field, our young team surprisingly won both the Vault and Floor, but we really struggled on the Bars,” noted C-I Coach Wendy Rooney.
Senior Emily Stewart, new to the team after working as a club gymnast, tied for 1st on th Beam with a 9.55 and was 2nd on the Floor with a 9.2. Freshman Britta Rud was the Jackets’ only all-arounder, finishing 10th with a 34.05 total while leading the team with a 9.0 on the Vault.
Michelle Ziebarth posted the team’s second-best score on the Floor with an 8.95. Morgan Urness and Jessica Christensen both sprang for 8.7 scores on the Vault to help C-I win that event.
Bismark, N.D. and Detroit Lakes finished just behind the Bluejackets with 137.8 and 136.5 team scores. Former section partner Elk River was 6th at 133.45.
This Saturday, the Bluejackets will challenge themselves at another tough gathering at the St. Cloud Apollo Invite. They will see Perham there again, along with Roseville, St. Cloud Tech and Mississippi 8 rival Big Lake.
