Hopkins hammers Braham Boys:
In a matchup of last season’s Class AA and A champions, the Braham girls held down Maranatha Christian 77-70 at the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic in Hopkins on Dec. 3. Becca Dahlman grabbed the spotlight with 47 points to go with 12 rebounds and 3 steals.
“Obviously this is a huge win for our young girls to play on this stage against that caliber of a team and come away with a win! Lots of growth throughout the game. We got behind at one point in the middle of the second half and then came right back at them,” said Braham Coach Tim Malone. “Later in the game their 6’2” center fouled out, and that really limited their ability at any kind of a comeback. This win for our young team is as big of a win as any we had last year, but it is only one. We need to build to that high level and then be able to maintain it.”
Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds, and Kayla Nickles added 10 rebounds and 8 points. Austin Eng dished 5 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds.
Braham 65, Mora 45
Jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the Bombers kept rolling to a 20-point non-conference win at Mora Dec. 1. The Mustangs are expected to be one of the contenders in Braham’s Section 7AA this season.
Dahlman scored 19 points by halftime and finished with 30 points. She also led the Bombers with 17 rebounds and 6 steals. Sorenson-Giffrow sunk 3 ‘3s’ amid her 13 points. Nickles scored 8 and led with 5 assists, and Amanda Sybrant provided 7 rebounds and 3 points.
“We played a very good first half. I used 11 girls in the second half to try and save legs for Saturday’s game against Maranatha. Our defense was very solid, especially in the first half,” said Coach Malone.
Hopkins 102, Braham Boys 67
Also at Hopkins on Saturday, the Bomber boys took on the challenge of the defending Class 4A champ Royals but were overwhelmed in a season-opening loss.
“It was 37-31, then they destroyed us with their depth,” said Bomber Coach Bob Vaughan.
Tyler Vaughan hit 5 three-pointers and finished with 27 points to lead Braham, adding 11 rebounds. Cameron Braund pitched in 15 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out. Sam Stigen (9 points), Anthony Bias (7 points) and Zach Dahlman (5 points) provided depth for Braham. Hopkins had seven players in double-figures.
This Saturday, the Bombers head to Minnetonka for the Boys Tip-Off Class against Class AAA defending champ Orono.
“Orono has two players back, but they have a great program one of the best players in the state in Brady Wohler,” scouted Coach Vaughan.
