Lucille was born Aug. 11, 1924 in St. Paul, Minn. to parents William and Edith (Harmon) Johnson. Born the second of six children, Lucille and the family moved around during her childhood eventually moving near Rush City, Minn. As a teenager, Lucille worked as a babysitter for a neighboring farm family, and later cared for an elderly neighbor.
On Nov. 19, 1941, Lucille was united in marriage to Roy C. Nelson in Cambridge, Minn. The couple continued to move around the Rush City, Rush Lake and Grandy areas over the next years until settling on the farm in Maple Ridge. Lucille and Roy raised five children. After the kids were grown, Lucille worked as a dishwasher for Herman’s Bakery in Cambridge, The Park Café in Braham, Grandma’s Kitchen in Mora, Grizzly’s in Pine City, and the Pub in Braham. After Roy’s death in 1988, Lucille sold the farm, and moved to a trailer home near her daughter Cathy. She continued to stay active, exercising twice a week at Curves and volunteering at Family Pathways in Isanti, One More Time in Mora, and Tusan Tack in Braham.
Lucille had many interests. She enjoyed crafts and sewing clothes for her children and grandchildren. She always had a large flower garden with Gladiolas being her favorite flower. She loved reading, doing puzzles, and playing all types of games. Lucille loved to travel, especially trips with her family to Oregon, or just up to Duluth and the North Shore. Lucille was very adventurous and liked camping, 4-wheeling, and waterslides in to her 70s. But most of all Lucille loved her family. She would host family picnics and reunions, gathering everyone together. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
