15-year-old from Mora killed in hunting accident

Jeremiah Daniel Scofield, 15, of Mora was killed during a deer hunting accident on Monday, Nov. 7.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Kanabec County Deputies, Mora Area Fire Department, Minnesota State Patrol and FirstLight Ambulance were dispatched to the 1900 block of 130 Avenue, Brunswick Township, in reference to a hunting accident.

Upon arrival, deputies found Scofield with a gunshot wound to his upper leg. He was in a deer stand approximately 10 feet off the ground. CPR was administered but he was pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigation indicates Scofield was attempting to remove his jacket, with the firearm between his legs, when the firearm accidentally discharged and fatally striking him in the upper inner leg.

No foul play is suspected in the incident.

The Kanabec County Sheriffs Office would like to emphasize to all people handling a firearm to practice safety first and know your gun is pointed in a safe direction and the safety mechanism is in place.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. This was a horrible accident, that should not have happened. I have 3 children that went to school with Jeremiah. They only have happy thoughts when it comes to thinking of him at school. His sense of humor and his smile were wonderful. We are truely sorry and will keep praying for everyone that this has affected.. God Bless..
