Jacket CC teams close season at 7AA finals
Braham races at 5A sections
The Cambridge-Isanti boys placed 9th and the girls were 13th when the Section 7AA Cross Country finals were hosted at the Cloquet Country Club Oct. 27.
The Forest Lake and Andover girls placed 1st and 2nd to advance to State, as did the section-champ Andover boys and runner-up Forest Lake boys.
Leading the Bluejacket girls were Paige Muehlhauser (54th, 16:42), Erica Young (58th, 16:54) and Alex Nelson (68th, 17:19).
Nelson wrapped up a fourth year running career for the Bluejackets at sections. “Cross country’s just a fun sport to be in. It might look like an individual sport, but really it’s the whole team out there pushing each other and supporting each other. It’s just exciting to see everyone improve over the season and over the years,” she said. “I was out with injuries the past couple of years for sections, so it was really nice to finish the senior year doing sections. I improved, so that was good!”
For senior Young, this autumn offered a one-year experience with CC. “It was really fun. I just really like the team,” she explained. “I run in all my other sports, so I thought I would try something new with cross country. It was a good experience.”
Pacing the Bluejacket boys were Alex Mendieta (42nd, 17:55), Trevor Galligan (43rd, 17:56), Jordan Kalk (49th, 18:04), James Edstrom (58th, 18:13), Kyle McCormick (59th, 18:13) and Sam Renier (60th, 18:13). The boys race was heading down the home stretch when a brief ice pellet squall fell from the sky.
“The only times we’ve been here it’s been cold and not great conditions. Overall, this year wasn’t that bad,” said senior Renier who has run C-I CC six seasons. Asked what his motiviation was for taking part in the sport, he added, “Definitely the team atmosphere. We’re all good friends– kind of like a family. That’s what keeps everyone coming back year after year.”
Senior Galligan, a four-year CC runner, was asked to analyze the layout of the Cloquet course. “The boys’ course tricks your mind with that first short lap at 1,000 meters, and then you have to mentally keep up with that double loop inside. It’s a tough course.”
