Barnum ends Bomber v-ball season in playoff opener
No. 3 seed Braham was defeated by No. 6 Barnum in the opening round of the Section 5A East subsections Oct. 27: 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-25, 15-13.
“Barnum’s outside hitter must have had somewhere around 20 kills, and we could not stop her with the block until game 4 when we made some line-up changes. The girls played with so much heart, and many of them left everything they had on the court,” said Bomber Coach Britne Engelking. “Dani Braund and Carley Lynch were a key factors for us in Game 4 to stop the outside attack, and it worked!. Any touch Carley and Dani got helped this team play out the point.
“Game 5 was up for grabs for both teams, and it really was down to the wire. At one point, you could have heard a pin drop in the gymnasium as fans from both schools were anxiously awaiting to see what would happen in the next play.”
Stat leaders for Braham– Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow: 8 kills, 9 digs, 29/29 serving w/2 aces; Kayla White: 19/21 serving w/ 3 aces, 6 digs, & outstanding defense; Carley Lynch: 18 assists, 5 kills, 7 digs, 2 blocks, 12/12 serving; Dani Braund: 2 blocks and several crucial touches; Kayla Nickles: 5 kills, 11 digs; Sara Tomlinson-4 digs, 7 kills; Amanda Sybrant: 2 blocks; Becca Dahlman: 7 kills; Briana Richmond: 2 digs, 13 assists.
Added Coach Engelking, whose Bombers closed the season at 17-10, “Our players in the back row did everything in their power to try to clinch this match. Nickles, Sorenson, White, Lynch and Tomlinson hit the floor and scrapped for every point. Briana Richmond played some of her best defense of the season. Amanda Sybrant scrapped for every block….we just could not get the ‘W’ against this team.”
