Section Cross Country finals next for Bluejackets, Bombers

The cross country season is winding down, with section races being held this Thursday for both the Cambridge-Isanti and Braham squads.

The Bluejackets head back once again to the Cloquet Country Club for the Section 7AA championships. The girls race starts off at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27, with the boys race to follow at 2:45 p.m.

The C-I boys will be gunning for a third-straight trip to State after finishing as 7AA runners-up the past two seasons. The challenge is raised considerably with the addition of Andover to the 7AA field this year; the Huskies are ranked 6th in Class AA. Chisago Lakes senior Luke McKenzie is the highest-ranked individual at 13th in AA boys.

The Bluejacket girls will be running to improve on their 13th-place finish last year at sections. The Andover girls are also very strong, finishing the regular season ranked 10th in Class AA. They are led by 11th-ranked junior Nicole Heitzman.

• Braham returns to the Pierz Golf Course for the Section 5A gathering, the site of last year’s finals. Racing gets underway at 4 p.m. Heavy favorites are the squads from St. Cloud Cathedral– both ranked No. 1 in Class A. The Annandale girls are also ranked 8th coming into sections.
