She was born on July 22, 1946 in Minneapolis to William and Frances Southerton. She grew up in the Mounds View area. Sandy had an older sister and a younger brother.
She went to Mounds View High School where she met and married her first love, Tom Cheney. They were married Oct. 15, 1962. Four wonderful children were created in this marriage, Jeff, Shelley, John and Bill. Tom and Sandy started out in the metro area and then got the idea to “try farming” and moved up to the Quamba area. They went to a little bigger “hobby farm” and moved to Malmo for three years. Mora seemed to be their favorite place, so they spent the rest of their time in the Mora area. They shared 38 years together enjoying the same hobbies of camping, fishing and spending time with friends and family. Tom was temporarily taken from Sandy on June 18, 2000 after a battle with cancer that she helped him through. They are now back together.
Sandy fought loneliness until she found her second love, Gary Broehl. They married Oct. 20, 2001. They enjoyed life together. They enjoyed several cruises together. She introduced Gary into her camping/fishing family and he was welcomed with open arms. She said many times that she was a lucky woman to find two men so special in her lifetime.
Sandy worked at Amoco (EPC) for many years and then at Fingerhut. She also sold Avon for many years and was known as the “ding dong lady.”
Sandy had many friends and carried a well-known smile at all times.
