Blue Star Moms ship packages to men and women serving overseas

Service men and women in Afghanistan will soon have a little piece of home thanks to a group of local women.
The Pine City chapter of the Blue Star Moms gathered at the Braham Post Office the morning of Thursday, Oct. 20, to ship 38 boxes of donations to armed forces personnel serving overseas. A 4-H group donated $400 to pay for shipping.
The Blue Star Moms Pine City Chapter 16 serves all of East Central Minnesota. Their purpose is to help those who have children serving abroad in all branches of the military — a support network for mothers, grandmothers and stepmothers with children serving.
“It’s good to send a little piece of home to them,” Laurie Hilgers said.
The organization ships packages several times throughout the year, said Braham City Council member and Blue Star Mom Tish Carlson. They sent around 20 packages in August, and are currently taking donations for a holiday shipment.
Most of the packages go to people they have never met before. They “adopt” the soldiers in hopes that the packages will make their day better.
“We’re all military moms,” Carlson said. “It’s just kind of a nice feeling.”
If you know of someone serving and would like to share their information, the Blue Star Moms can add them to the list for future packages.
Cash donations can be sent to: PCBSM – PO Box 258, Pine City, MN 55063.
Blue Star Moms meets at the VFW in Pine City every third Monday at 6:30 p.m. For more information or for a list of donation sites, find them on Facebook at Pine City Blue Star Moms.
