Bombers take control of conference by subduing Dragons

Braham made a huge stride toward its first Great Polar Football Alliance Blue Division title after throttling defending conference champ Pine City on the road Sept. 23. The Bombers will aim to keep their momentum rolling with another league game in the Sept. 30 Homecoming battle with Aitkin.

Braham drove 65 yards on its first possession, taking an early 6-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Tyler Vaughan. The defense shut down the Dragons, then Cory Ambrose set up the offense with a 21-yard punt return. The Bombers went 37 yards in less than a minute, with Ambrose grabbing an 11-yard TD pass from Vaughan.

Pine City broke off one big run to get into Bomber territory, but its fourth-down run was stopped by Shaun Hollencamp. Braham rolled right back on a 61-yard scoring drive, with Hollencamp finding the end zone on a 15-yard run.

Ambrose recovered a fumble on the kickoff, and Vaughan ran for his second TD from 5 yards out. Then with 4:31 to go in the half, Braham began a 77-yard march. Dylan Altendorf hauled in a key 14-yard catch on 3rd-and-7 to keep it alive, and Vaughan sprinted on gains of 33 and 21 yards. Ambrose then got open for a 7-yard scoring pass with 4 seconds left in the half to push Braham ahead 34-0.

Pine City showed a little life by opening the second half with a scoring drive. But the Bombers answered right back when Kevin Strelow broke away on a 20-yard TD run. The Bombers’ final score of the night was Ambrose finishing the hat trick with a 12-yard reception from Vaughan.

Vaughan closed the evening with 201 yards rushing, and he completed 9-of-16 passes for 103 yards. Hollencamp added 40 yards rushing as the Bombers out-gained the Dragons 394-197 in total yards. Strelow led the defense with 12 tackles.
