Volleyball: Bombers 2nd at invite, Jackets sweep Wildcats

Braham volleyball opened last week with a tough sweep at Rush City, but the team rebounded with a 4-1 showing at the Grantsburg Invite, good for 2nd place.

Against the GRC-leading Tigers, the Bombers tried a couple different lineup looks in the 26-24, 25-12, 25-19 loss. Kayla Nickles continued her strong play with 8 digs, 3 kills and 3 blocks. Becca Dahlman led with 9 kills and 9 digs. Eighth-grader Carley Lynch provided 14 assists and 3 ace serves, and Sara Tomlinson added 6 kills.

Coach Britne Engelking commented that a “whole new team” showed up Saturday morning for the Grantsburg tourney. In pool play, the Bombers defeated Frederic (25-23, 25-12), Webster (25-13, 26-24) and Northwood (25-8, 25-11). In the tourney semis, they kept rolling with a 25-13, 25-20 win over New Richmond.

That put Braham in the finals against the host Pirates who were Wisconsin State runners-up last season. “Although we lost 14-25 and 16-25, we hung on and put up a fight point-for-point until they ran away with it near the end of each game,” replayed Coach Engelking. “At one point we were tied 14-14 and each point was extremely intense. Playing at this level will really be helpful for the rest of our season.”

Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow had 11 digs and 4 kills against the Pirates. Briana Richmond (9 assists) and Dahlman (5 kills, 7 deflections) also added highlight numbers.
