Isanti kept on their perfect run in the Minnesota Class C amateur baseball tournament with two more victories this weekend. The Redbirds are in the catbird seat, reaching the Monday, Sept. 5 championship and needing to be beaten twice by survivor Waconia.
The first championship game will be at 1 p.m. at Brownton on Labor Day. A second game, if necessary, will follow at 3:30 p.m.
The championship will be a rematch of the Saturday night, Sept. 3 game which saw Isanti defeat Waconia 11-5 in the final winners’ bracket match. Joe Ramberg went 8 innings for the ‘Birds, striking out 7 while allowing 8 hits. Isanti exploded for 5 runs in the first inning when Packy Lind was hit by a pitch, Eric Rysdam singled, then Kyle Johnson drove in Lind with a hit. After Tyler Schaff reached on an error to load the bases, Brian Schultz’s fly to center wasn’t handled, clearing the bases. Wyatt Soderquist then singled home Schultz to make it 5-1.
Eric Rysdam later ripped a solo homer in the fourth for insurance.
Waconia defeated Mankato 6-3 in the final losers’ bracket game on Sunday, Sept. 4, overcoming a 3-1 deficit with a 5-run eighth inning.
• On Friday, Sept. 2, Isanti began the weekend with an 8-4 win over Nisswa, with Wade Reichmann picking up his 11th victory of the season on the mound. A Rysdam base hit and a 2-run double by Bud Heifort put the Redbirds in control in the fourth.
